Liberation Bakery

It's rewarding to see our customers respond so positively to the option of being able to buy our naturally leavened breads.   We believe that the naturally leavening not only improves the favor and crust, but also the wholesomeness of the loaves, creating a completely different food product than mass produced breads.   We hope you agree.

Liberation Bakery was an idea born out of Kathleen's desire to "shake it up" and do what she was passionate about, when she felt like doing it, no matter how little money she made.  Hence...  Liberation Bakery.  Where the yeast goes wild AND
the Baker has Radical Ideas.  Ora became a bit smitten with baking herself and together they teamed up to create Liberation Bakery.

Liberation Bakery is basically a micro bakery...a super duper small bakery , run by Kathleen Busche and Ora Jewell-Busche. We've created a small bakery in our home and sell bread under the Minnesota Cottage industry rules. Yup, we’re licensed to bake bread at home and sell directly to our customers. We cannot sell commercially.

We operate as a Community Supported Bakery(CSB). A CSB is very similar in concept to a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), in that it's providing locally produced food on a small scale to community members, but because we're selling baked goods, it’s a little different. Unlike a CSA where you make a commitment to buy food every week , our CSB members order only when they want, what they want. Isn't that Liberating!
Kathleen has been baking bread since childhood, but was truly inspired by bread baking when she discovered naturally leavened breads about 10 years ago. Since then she has been taking professional level baking classes around the country to develop her skills in a highly creative and challenging craft. She has been a part of the Bread Bakers Guild of America since 2010.
Ora is new to the craft, but is a keen observer and a skilled artist( a make-up, hair and costume designer by trade). Her skills in scoring breads are demonstrated on some of our most beautiful loaves. Ora began her professional training as an artisan baker in the spring of 2018 at the San Francisco Baking Institute and is a memebr of the Bread Bakers Guild of America.

Being liberated, we have no set store hours or a brick and mortar location.  We sell at farmers markets and thru a weekly email.  If you would like to be added to our email list, please contact us at [email protected]
We're licensed through the State of Minnesota Cottage Industry Laws.  We bake out of our home kitchen, which has been not inspected.  All baked goods are baked by

Being liberated ..we don't have regular hours or even a storefront.  If you would like to join our email order list contact us at [email protected]

How do you order bread?

When we are inspired and so inclined( isn’t liberation fun?) we schedule a “Bake Day”.   Then we send an email to our members with a menu for that day and a timeline for ordering items.  The types of breads and sweets will change each Bake Day, but  there will be a few breads that we consistently offer. You are NOT required to order items, but if you do, items will need to be picked up between 4-6pm on pick-up day. Right now pick-up is happening in downtown Duluth at 7 1/2 W Superior St, but that could change. You pay for items when you pick them up.   We prefer  cash or checks, but can accept credit cards(there is  a 3% fee convenience fee added to your order).
